Set Up and Troubleshoot Chest HR Monitor on CAROL Bike

This article explains how to use and troubleshoot a chest-strap heart rate monitor with your CAROL Bike, including pairing steps, wearing and fit, a quick sensor check, and basic battery and connection troubleshooting.

Summary

  • How to wear and fit the chest strap for reliable readings
  • How to pair the heart rate monitor with the CAROL Bike tablet
  • Quick sensor test and basic battery/connection troubleshooting

Wearing the chest strap (best practice)

  1. Slightly wet the electrode areas on the back of the chest strap before putting it on.
  2. Attach the heart rate sensor with the marking "L" toward the left side of the strap.
  3. Adjust the strap so it is tight enough to stay securely in place but remains comfortable. Ensure the moist electrode areas sit firmly against skin and the front of the sensor is central and upright.
  4. When the sensor beeps twice and the LED turns green, a heart rate has been detected and the monitor is being worn correctly. The chest belt will then connect automatically with CAROL.

Pairing the heart rate monitor with the CAROL Bike

  1. Log into your CAROL account on the bike tablet.
  2. Tap the Bluetooth icon (located in the top right on the ride selection screen).
  3. Under "Heart Rate Monitor" choose a mode: Automatic, Semi-Auto, or Manual.
  4. If you select Semi-Auto or Manual, a list of nearby devices will appear. Tap your heart rate monitor from that list and then tap "Connect."
  5. After successful connection, a heart symbol icon will appear in the top right of the screen to indicate the chest belt is reading your heart rate.
  6. Once connected you can tap the back arrow to return to the workout screen.

Quick sensor check (verify the sensor electronics)

  1. Unclip the heart rate sensor module from the chest strap.
  2. Place one thumb on each of the metal contact pins of the sensor.
  3. If the sensor beeps twice, it is detecting a reading and the electronics are functional.
  4. If it does not beep twice, check that the battery is correctly inserted or replace the battery.

Basic troubleshooting steps

  • No beeps from sensor:
    • Verify the battery is seated correctly or replace the battery.
  • Heart rate not showing on tablet after wearing strap:
    • Ensure the electrode areas are slightly wet and making firm contact with skin.
    • Confirm the sensor is clipped into the strap with "L" oriented left and the sensor is centered and upright.
    • Check Bluetooth on the tablet and re-open the Heart Rate Monitor settings; select Semi-Auto or Manual and connect to the listed device.
  • After connecting, look for the heart symbol in the top right of the tablet screen to confirm the belt is reading heart rate.

Notes and helpful tips

  • Two beeps and a green LED indicate good contact and a detected heart rate.
  • Using Semi-Auto or Manual pairing will present the device list so you can explicitly connect the chest belt to the tablet.
  • Wetting the electrodes before fastening improves contact and detection reliability.
